Scholarship opportunities are up for grabs and students are more than welcome to apply. However, most students do not take the opportunities to apply for the 1,800 scholarships offered.
The net-worth of all the scholarships that are offered through Glendale Community College (GCC) reaches a total of $1.5 million.
The amount grew compared to last year where the total only reached $1.1 million. The scholarships range from $50 a semester to $2,500 a semester.
Even though the opportunities are available, only around 150 students applied for them last year.
Frances S. Mateo, coordinator of GCC's Development and Scholarship Relations, is in charge of informing the students at GCC of scholarships that are offered.
She assists students through the application process individually and conducts workshops on the scholarship process.
"Out of all the colleges, GCC has the most money in scholarships," Mateo said, Just by attending GCC a student can have an advantage over other students around the Valley in obtaining a scholarship.
The opportunities are based on educational achievement, financial need, hobbies, religious affiliation, memberships and other individual qualifications. They are offered to any student except for the general scholarships that are offered only at GCC.
These scholarships are set up to be given to students related to their major carriers.
Some of these scholarships involve very simple applications.
For the first time, students will be able to apply for scholarships both online (see the web address below) and by submitting forms the traditional way in person.
International scholarships are offered as well as scholarships for part-time students.
These scholarships are available from many of our Valley's companies including APS, Chicanos por la Causa, and Maricopa Community Colleges.
